I'm waiting for an offer from Amazon for an L5 BIE position based in Seattle. I'm currently in the the Bay Area in Analytics (non-data analyst)

What are your thoughts on TC and career ladder growth?

Current TC:~ 120k
L3 Base- 92k annual
Bonus - 10k annual
Stock - 12k annual + 8k new hire
YOE: 5yrs; 2yrs @Uber

Offer TC: ~140k (waiting on offer) which seems low to me for an BIE title. Not sure if I am being under levelled as well.

My current duties align with a potential move to the data eng org as I deal with data pipeline ETLs for my team. Debating on whether I should pursue Analytics career path or Data Eng Path and if it should be in Uber or Amazon.

Great! Did you end up accepting? What was your offer and YOE if I may ask, I'm worried they might low-ball me given the current state of the market

Sure, sorry didn't check over the weekend. I focused on the STAR method with most examples having a good mix of stakeholder management and data wrangling.

For the tech side, it was rather simple queries, window functions, lead/lag etc. Just be very vocal with each step of what you do.

Same here. Got a Bie offer. As far as I know, the BIE role can also transfer to DE (which is a very popular path). I’m on OPT so stability matters more to me :)

You are going to be working a lot more at Amazon and probably have more stress - but it’s much easier to move up in Amazon than Uber

Yeah, I noticed. Moving up is hard, I love Uber but I really don't like playing the politics and having to keep fighting with HR in regards to job ladder and pay. Also been through 7 managers in 2 years with those that left near a promo cycle never leaving any feedback.

Random question, what’s reasonable TC for Uber L4 BA in Bay Area?

  • I'd say a good jump in TC considering you are going from Bay area to Seattle.

Thanks, yeah, I'm thinking that as well since COL is down and low income tax. Concern is I won't be moving at least in 2020 so I won't be receiving the benefits of tax and CoL
