Is it worth it to work at Abbott?

Apr 20 3 Comments

A recruiter from a firm reached out to me about a month ago for a Supervisor role at Abbott. I had a phone screen call and they asked me questions about my supervisor experience, pay, etc. I just got a message back from Abbott yesterday saying they would like to go forward in interviewing me as a Specialist — same department, but no mention of the title change. They then emailed me today asking if I can do my interview same day with 2 hours notice.

Abbott is a well known name so could be good to have that on my record, but this is a lot. Also on the initial call they told me it was based in Chicago, when it’s actually based 1 hour outside of Chicago and requires in office 4 days a week.

TC for Abbott: 95K + year end bonus

Toxic leadership/politics just like most giant orgs like that. But find yourself a good team and stay as far as you can away from upper management and you’ll have a great time. They work on some very cool medical tech and have a lot of offices around the world so if you find an excuse to travel that’s a plus. The corporate tech was very outdated when I was there but maybe that changed.

Forgot to mention, I recommend negotiating your way to salary grade 18 at start which is where they start to provide RSUs. It’s senior/lead role, and they provide barely any stock compared to Silicon Valley, but it’s tough to get promoted to that grade if you start below it. You need a bunch of management to vouch for you, etc. Though regardless you can stay there for a year or two for experience and then hop somewhere else.
