So I bumped into a hot chic’s profile in tech (legit question.. bear with me) and in similar profiles, it started showing me other hot girls in tech.

Tried the same in finance, Linked grouped hot girl profiles in finance for me.

To test the theory, looked up an older dude working in insurance and it showed me other older dudes.

Is LinkedIn profiling based on appearance or “likability” or is it just a coincidence?

  • No. I'm familiar with the algorithm and it's based on profile co-views (e.g. you do a search and click on a bunch of profiles) sessionized in 30 min intervals. The results reflect people's profile viewing behaviors. Are you surprised that people (including yourself) click on a bunch of hot girls one after the other?

We do not (and I can't stress this enough, to the point that it's often hugely inconvenient) use the profile photo for generating any recommendations. We take privacy seriously.

  • Attractive people have more profile views (mostly stalkers). And profile views is an important feature in recommending profiles.

Oh yeah and how many profile views does the typical "hot" person get every 90 days? Male vs Female. It's like a PM estimation question. I'm guessing hot females get like 5x the number of views of hot males.

lol this is utterly unsurprising. in addition to co-views, P(hot girl #1 click) is not independent of P(hot girl #2 click) and so on

if you click on one, there’s a higher probability you’ll click on another. you don’t need image content-level understanding. sessionization and collaborative filtering will give you that signal

It’s LinkedIn’s secret “Hot or Not” algorithm (patent pending)

Here's another data point. I clicked on a Linkedin profile of an unusually hot SWE girl at Google. Hey, I'm only flesh and blood. And then suddenly there were suggestions for all these other hot SWE girls at Google. I'm like, holy shit why are there so many hot SWE girls at Google? I'm pretty sure that's not representative of the real population at Google.
