So Uber announced it will also rollout tipping in app. The main reason I use Uber lately, given all the negativity surrounding the company, is the no tipping experience. Once it takes effect, I'll probably go to Lyft unless the solicitation is not in your face. The tipping culture adds that extra tiny bit of stress that I would rather not deal with, given a choice. From what I understand, this was an explicit choice by Uber to differentiate and improve the customer experience (as is underpaying drivers, you know the argument).

Anyone else have thoughts around this?

We have decided to put drivers first. Tipping is something that will benefit them the most and what they have been asking very clearly for. We're trying to balance this with keeping riders happy of course.

We are lucky to have a great competitor like Lyft - and you should absolutely use them if you feel they are a better fit for you - may that be pickup time, price, coverage, brand or other reasons.

  • I don't think you need to tip if you do not want to. The tipping process happens after your ride is over, there is no awkward interaction with the driver about tip. Take the ride, get out, decide if you want to tip or not after. Where is the stress?

    why the hate on tipping?

isn't this exactly pricing the service based on the user? Rich users will tip more, not so rich will tip less..

    • Exactly. And I don't tip during surge pricing. The driver is getting extra anyway.

Not about rich and poor. It's about presenting the consumer with an extra decision, more friction, irrespective of being optional. I'm the kind of person who wonders if I should have tipped for takeout, furniture delivery, the handyman next door who helps move something, etc. I don't hate on tipping; completely understand the culture on it, why we do it, and who it benefits. The message received day to day is not optional. Tip jars prominently displayed. Anchoring tip options at 15%+ for credit card transaction when I believe you should get 0% for pouring me brewed coffee. Then to make things (slightly) worse, extra clicks in the UI to not choose defaults and give you less than 15%. Boo hoo, I know. Just throwing the topic out there!

Lyft asks for tips too. The tip button is below the scroll on the rating page, easier to ignore.
