Would it make sense to move from Apple to Facebook with the same compensation for SWE role?

What are the benefits of working at FB compared to Apple?

Yoe: 5, at Apple: 2, ICT3, IS&S org
Base $150k, perf bonus 20k, yearly RSU refreshers $70k

I personally wouldn’t want to work at Facebook because they are unethical.

No Apple doesn’t have people mine materials. This is such nonsense. And pricing doesn’t create advantage for people. All of China and India is advancing forward on technical levels even though iPhones are not the top phone product there. Seriously come up with something logical at least. There is an “ick factor” when it comes to Facebook and ads. I am not saying it’s wrong but it is there. But facebooks engineers are really good, the company is very mission and data oriented, there is testing and delivery of good product and you get paid and advance. That ick factor might not be worth it when you take all of that into account. You just have to go with what meets your priorities at any point in time.

According to this article, Apple removed companies from their supply chain as recently as 2019 (offering transparency as of 2016): https://9to5mac.com/2019/12/16/child-labor-in-cobalt-mines/

And yea other countries are advancing still, but as a developer or student there is a reason Apple is preferred. Your ecosystem is creating an exclusive ease of life only offered to the fortunate. That’s undeniable and the ecosystem continues to grow.

Facebook isn’t perfect, but if they can resolve their issue, they are in the same boat as any other company. That being said, you are right. There is an “ick” to them until they fix their issues. They do beautiful things for society in ways, but they need to address the issues too.

  • Where my favorite FB paid shills (easzs, higsdf) at?

Did you tag the thread properly? It's been 3 hours already and they are not showing up. I'm concerned if they are well.

Maybe they changed their usernames? Or did they get pip'd for spending too much time on blind?

  • I worked at both before.

Pros of FB are pay transparency, better industry reputation, more open and engineering-driven culture, and higher bar for managers.

Apple is much more diverse, so it’s harder to pick out pros and cons. However, speaking from my experience, the pros of Apple are better stock growth and ESPP, better WLB and stronger connection to the product, and more mature and easygoing colleagues.

Compared to FB, Apple has a lot more people who actually believe in the company and are in it for the long haul. The downside is that you’ll find more deadwood, resistance to innovation, and secrecy. In contrast, FB has a lot more folks who are in it for the pay but don’t really feel passionate or optimistic about the product. This is both because there is so much freaking drama and because, let’s be honest, lots of people our age don’t use FB anymore.

Having said all that, if you can adopt the mercenary mindset and drown out the noise, I still think FB is the best company overall for SWE, especially if you are junior and don’t have many family obligations. It’s just hard to beat their combo of career growth, TC, and open culture.

You’d have a chance at being leveled up since 5 YOE qualifies you for E5. Do you have a clear path to ICT4? If not, moving companies should offer a big boost in TC.

Keep in mind most of the perks of other companies are non existent during covid. The goal of moving for better growth/opportunities is always a risk, as that’s team dependent.

I personally wouldn’t want to work for FB tho.
