Posted on Amazon page earlier and posting here for more exposure. Please share if you've had similar situation or any advice. Much appreciated!

I'm currently in my first trimester and was told by my manager today that she's put me on a dev plan (for 30 days, with possible extension to 60 days).

I started at Amazon last year and reported to my skip level. I was a high performer during last perf review, but was re-orged to my current manager after the review cycle in April.. My manager has none technical background and I can sense she's struggling managing me. Our communication has been inconsistent, this week she says one thing, next week could be opposite. I'm the only tech person on my team and all projects I delivered so far I built from scratch and I own end to end.

However.. as I'm in dev plan right now, what would be the best option for me? I disclosed to my manager that I'm currently pregnant when she told me about the dev plan.. I'm thinking:

1) I can try to ask for extension to 2 months giving my situation
2) If I don't make it, take medical leave for 3 months
3) I return from medical leave and get ready for pip (if I choose Pivot after pip, it can earn me another month)

So basically, if I can get out of Dev plan and stay at Amazon until I give birth, that would be great; if not, I will have about 6 month period to find a new company. So priorities right now:

1) Take no risk at my pregnancy (esp given the fact that I had two miscarriages this year)
2) Keep my visa status before finding the next job

I have a teammate who got pip earlier this year. She had paper trail for racism and discrimination on my team and hired a very good legal team. My assumption is company has paid a lot to settle this. She’s one of the most hard-working people I’ve worked with and she spoke out for other people. Her pip happened right after her promo to L6.

I’m not planning to fight this dev/pip thing, Amazon has some great people, I’m just unlucky to end on a team which now I see has a history for toxic culture.

This sucks. I’m sorry you’re going through this. Tell your HR business partner your situation. The fact you went from a good review, got reorg’d and now put on a dev plan is insane.

Also getting pregnant is a total shock to your lifestyle and focus. This isn’t fair and Amazon should right this.

sad ... Amazon is the most toxic place in the world.

Please apply for FMLA, maternity leaves and in the meanwhile search for next job. Then come back, be in your dev plan, don't do anything, will add another one month to your employment before moving to PIP. Leave with severance. Use this time to relax and search for another job

Thanks you guys so much for your advice and kind words. I’m sorry if you’ve experienced the same. We all deserve better.

This’s very helpful. So sound like the best strategy is that I start to prep for leave right away, if I get maximum 6 months unpaid leave, I think I can start using my parental leave a month before I give birth, then come back for the Dev plan and the rest of things. Am I understanding this correctly?

Your manager should be in deep trouble for messing up with a pregnant woman.

She should have immediately reverted the plan after knowing.

My manager and skip are reacting fast to my situation, they don’t want to get in trouble. But I’m still in dev plan, and I’m not counting they would revert.
