I can’t believe the lunacy of some of these Front End interviews I’ve had lately.

* One company had a back end SDE do the Sys Design round. They asked me your typical system design question. Not the end of the world, I know how the game is played. But damn, you guys are getting zero useful information out of questions like that. Front end engineers aren’t touching 99% of things talked about in your normal system design interviews.

* Direct quote from the system design round of another company -

Interviewer: “I’m a Staff Front End Engineer. You’re interviewing for a Senior Front End role, correct?”

Me: “Yep.”

Interviewer: “Cool, let’s do some back end system design.”

…cut to the end of the interview

Interviewer: “Yeah so senior front end engineers probably aren’t gonna touch most of the stuff we talked about here.”

Cool, thanks for wasting my time and yours getting that useless info. Not even exaggerating either - those are direct quotes from the interview.

* Multiple interviewers have had no idea what ES6 has introduced to JS. Basic things anyone who has worked on the front end in recent years should know and be experienced with.

* Multiple interviewers knew nothing about different state management methods and other things related to modern web applications.

* Multiple interviewers asking trick questions about JS that I’m sure they just googled before the call since no one would ever be thinking about those things when actually working.

I mean, it’s incredibly really. I invest all this time to interview for a role, the company invests time and resources to interview me, but they can’t even be bothered to conduct proper interviews? And it’s 2022 - surely they have people on staff capable of understanding the front end enough to properly interview a candidate.
