  • I am on h1b and I see merit in right wings argument.

In infosys, wipro etc, h1b is used as a perk!!! If you say u r leaving them for a higher salary, they will lure you with an h1b offer!! That is a profound abuse of the system.

I am all for putting checks to prevent this abuse.

The Donald Trump administration has often blamed H-1B workers for stealing jobs from Americans. But this myopic view ignores how much these foreign workers contribute to the US economy

Above is a strawman argument. Itโ€™s not myopic because those very Americans out of work would also be paying the same taxes if they were employed in the same job as the H1b.

In fact many on H1b send money home or will eventually move back home. where as most Americans stay here, spend here, retire here. Every dollar they earn aside from foreign vacations goes back into the American economy. Every time the dollar changes hands its taxed. Meanwhile my neighbor is sending thousands back home.

The American pie ๐Ÿฅง is being sent abroad. And letโ€™s not forget the IP Chinese H1b are taking with them too. Because letโ€™s face it. China has only given us fake hand bags, tiktok and covid. They are #2 by theft.

I will raise my hand and try to answer the question

Most H1Bs pay may be more taxes but not less than a citizen and youโ€™re right a citizen would pay the same amount. However, H1B are not a burden on the already fragile healthcare system, have absolutely no criminal record, and most importantly no power to vote. The last point is why so many American political parties donโ€™t give H1Bs paths to citizenship easily.

I digress. The most important piece is social security, healthcare and all the expenses that a country bears on its citizens.

You bring up remittances to their country. Letโ€™s talk about that. On the surface companies like remitly, PayPal and others employ thousand and thousands of American workers. Transfer of money from one country to the other is a part of globalization. When you buy that โ€œcheapโ€ iPhone thatโ€™s because of globalization or strong American dollar.

I could go on and on and on but youโ€™re walking on thin ice when you undermine the amount of benefits that high skilled immigrants bring to this country

There are US citizens with the same degree from the same school out of work. This high skilled argument is a myth. Bottom line corporations hire OPT because they donโ€™t have to pay FICA taxes. All the stories about these lazy millennials living in their moms basement. Why do you think that is? Sure some are truly lazy. But when there are hundreds of thousands of OPT one has to wonder. Then they have several attempts at H1b. Meanwhile that millennial is told employers want experience and remain unemployed. OPT isnโ€™t some internship. Itโ€™s real work and corporations are undercutting Americans for discounted labor.

Taxation without representation is the reason why this whole country was born and yet here we are.
