Catfished by Employers - Seeking Advice

I recently started a new position at a large professional service and analytics company as a “Machine Learning Engineer” - they were hiring several candidates at the time. After starting the new position, I was immediately reassigned to a new team without any communication. After about a month, I’m doing a lot of tasks outside of my R&R that wasn’t described in the JD - my role is supposed to be purely technical, but there’s a lot of project management involved.

I discussed this situation with my manager and he wasn’t aware that I was hired on as an MLE. My manager discussed it with the VP and the feedback was there isn’t an open role for that, but they can work towards me becoming a data scientist as a long term goal…

I’m looking to apply to new jobs, I’m just not sure what other options I have. Any feedback and suggestions would be really appreciated!

This is not ideal. Have you interviewed with other companies prior to jumping to this ship and turned down their offers? If so wouldn't hurt to see if they can reconsider your candidacy.

Yeah so I don't think this short stint will hurt you much, as long as you realize it's not gonna work better stop the bleeding ASAP. It's unfortunate and I hope you'll land an ideal position soon. I also didn't get to talk to peers in my recent interviews 😑 you may ask difficult questions, but still hard to get real answers until you're in.

I worked for just 6 months at a job that seemed awesome when interviewing but turned out to suck hard once I was in. Nobody ever cared about that short tenure when I explained why.

  • Disappointing!! Interview and leave, let them change their long term goal to ‘learning how to hire the right candidate!!’
