i suck at leet code but im fabulous at front end. fuck algorithm I dont need that shit to build UI in javascript. Do people at ur company interview front end candidates with algorithm questions? is it worth studying LC if im never ever going to use it? #leetcode #facebook #airbnb
I’m FEE too. Keep your LC dose high kiddo
how was your interview process?
Aye we’re in the same boat. I’m trying to get my foot in the door as a front end engineer. Based on the advice I’ve gotten on here though, ever since I’ve learned basic html, css, js, and made a few apps with reactjs, I’ve been solely focusing on leetcode hardcore because leetcode = high TC unless you’re content with a mediocre job at an average company.
Just a data point, but I did mostly FE at Google but hired in as a "Software Engineer" so just got the usual leetcode in interviews. These days there is a separate job title called Front End software engineer with its own separate rubric. If you interview for that expect to be asked webdev specific questions, e.g. JS, HTML/CSS, talk through design of a SPA, tradeoffs of frameworks you've used, etc. Although even then you'll probably still get some leetcode questions, but idk. Salesforce/FB have asked me JS/HTML/CSS trivia before as well. Best to be prepared for some of both
Mm ok thanks for the advice. I sort of wish they just tested leetcode since that’s all I’ve been doing 😂 (It’s Sam Ovens)
Dan Abramov tweeted once upon a time that UI people go through a different interview process which involves simpler LC and more other things. He works for facebook in react team, if u care to dig deeper.
FB has different interview track for front end
Details? Wondering how to prepare for one
Start here, then GlassDoor filtered by "Front End Engineer." https://twitter.com/dan_abramov/status/1095133998584602626?s=21
I did frontend interviews for FB, G and Airbnb last year. FB: No leetcode. Even the systems design was Frontend focused. G: All leetcode and 1 frontend interview. Airbnb: mixed. Phone screen was LC, and 1 LC on site. Then 2 frontend onsite. Fb had the best process and interviewers imo.
What is FE system design like?
How would you build a search bar for Facebook? How would you build the Pinterest feed including layout? Both including component breakdown, backend apis, things like that. Need to define functionality, use cases, and can dive into perf, accessibility, reusability, theming, etc.
You definitely need algorithms if you are building something from scratch. Imagine if your team is building webpack and you don't know what is topological sort. Having said that, if you are an IC and applying for a UI/UX role (not front end) then yes leetcode is overkill. Else, I'd say you are a software engineer first and then front end engineer next (domain expertise) PS: I'm a front end engineer myself.
