This is my first post here so please be patient! 😊

I am computer engineering major at the top 1% at Southern Methodist University, not the best school but I think pretty good school. I also had an internship and research assistance positions, and everybody that see my resume says that I should find a job easily.

The catch is I am foreign with no U.S citizenship, just F-1 visa (OPT for 3 years).

I am currently a senior who is looking for a full-time position and I have high expectation – experience-wise as well as payment-wise (around 100k).

I will be glad to hear some advices or any help which will be more than appreciated.

Do you think my expectations are too high?

How much do you think my visa status affects the difficulty in find a position?

Thank you so much for the help!

I did the Amazon SDE1 processes and passed the first 2 parts. I failed on the third part which was behavioral.

You shouldn’t have any expectations on salary considering no experience & visa. Just try to get into your foot into the door, gain some experience and then have expectations.

This only applies if you aren’t able to crack FAANG or top companies. Unfortunately your research or none of that matter. Only LC does.

    1. Drop your expectations. Do what is required and expect nothing. This will keep you grounded and on watch for opportunities. Think about numbers once the company sends the offer.
    2. Leetcode, especially company decks on premium.
    3. Do pramp interviews. This helps you figure out on how to Crack interviews.
    4. Connect with people on linkedin who have been in similar situation, graduated in last few years came from your home country. Set up a call just to talk about their journey and how they tackled this situation. It gives you hope, and most importantly a direct connection who can refer you.
    5. There is a Pitts new grad Readme file on github. Watch that daily and apply to newly added jobs as soon as they show up. Remember applying early is the key.
