Why do people pay higher dealership markup?

Why not so no to such crap? Before you shove demand and supplydown my throat, there's a limit to that and it just encourages dealerships to collude

And not buy a new car if you need one?

Also for used cars going the craigslist route might be cheaper but you take the hit on time meeting with different owners and the risk of getting a bad car.

    • Not really, most private owners have a very inflated sense of value. They are expecting 40% more than usual irrespective of brand which makes no sense. Most 7 year old cars are above $16k

  • Same reason people take jobs at a lower salary than you would - because they need a job, and are willing to accept the terms.

If the whole market is up it's kinda hard to argue and negotiate as you can't find it cheaper elsewhere. Definitely don't take markups from your local dealer just because they think they can. Like SF area dealers adding 50% just because there is money in the area. Buy one elsewhere and ship it.
