Was approached on Linked In about participating in a WGU Cloud Assessment beta test for compensation. The tests require installing ES Secure Browser. Didn't see anything particularly negative about this online and Bitdefender didn't seem too upset... at first. Then it said that it blocked the software for being malware. I decided that I'd just set up a VM and do the assessment there so that they can jusy spy on my VM. After installing Hyper-V and starting up a new VM, I noticed that lock, shutdown, and restart were disabled on my host pc. I tried to check Task Manager and that was disabled too. I restarted from the command prompt and when I booked back up, my network wasn't responding. I uninstalled Hyper-V thinking maybe it changed something, but the blocks persisted. I was finally able to find several registry entries disabling all of these things. I'm still not sure if this was something strange with installing Hyper-V (there are a few complaints about similar issues with the Creator's update) or if the browser started disabling things before my antivirus caught it. But in any case, be very cautious if approached about beta testing an assessment for WGU or anything similar.
