What is the promo process like at other companies?

I've worked at Microsoft and Google and I have to say Google's seems much more stressful.

At both companies I had to dig through the past to find things I worked on.

At Google the amount of detail required is much higher. You need to find individual CLs, docs, bugs, etc that prove you did what you said. Then you need peer reviewers to confirm that and then a 3rd party committee to verify it all and make a decision. Your feedback from your manager on how you're doing is less useful since they don't make the call in the end. Your boss can say you are strongly exceeding expectations for many cycles but that won't translate to a promo.

At Microsoft, I just gave my boss a a page or two with lighter details and he/she did the rest. They are the ones fighting for you in the meetings so their feedback is a little more useful since they are more involved in the process.

So I'm just wondering what other companies are like?
