Stripe Data Scientist role vs Machine Learning Engineer (MLE)

Jan 12 3 Comments

Hi all,

I am a Machine Learning Researcher and Engineer. I recently had an initial call with a Stripe recruiter. They really reached out to me for a Data Scientist role. My understanding so far has been that at Stripe, it is Machine Learning Engineers who build ML Models and do heavy ML and Deep Learning stuff, not Data Scientists (I interviewed for MLE at Stripe last year).

However, the recruiter told me that MLE only do Machine Learning deployment and Infra work, and Data Scientists do Machine Learning modelling. I am not sure which one is right. On one hand I would believe the recruiter but when they described the next steps in interviewing, there isn't a single coding round. Also not many ML rounds, but SQL etc.

So, I am thinking who does Machine Learning at Stripe — MLE or Data Scientist? And is the recruiter just trying to sell me the role without telling me the truth?

Would appreciate comments from people working at Stripe or who interviewed there. Please let me know. Thanks everyone in advance :).

I have seen both. MLEs are considered engineers and DSs have a variety of data-related responsibilities at the end of the day. Read the job descriptions carefully.

Do you mainly write production code or provide insights? What stacks do you use? Do you have a PhD in something quantitative or a BS/MS in CS?

I can’t tell you what’s right for your answers but these are the kinds of questions you should be asking the recruiter.

Data Scientists are used as Data monkeys and MLE is Data Aggregation Engg. Why would you join as either?
