I’m born and raised in San Francisco. Have loved the hustle and bustle of the city and all the city had to offer. I’m a single mom with a 5 year old and I’m sad that all he sees is homeless and mentally ill people roaming around. I want to leave since we are wfh til February 2021 but I’m not sure what I can afford. Any ideas on Bay Area housing? What about San Diego? Open to renting or buying.

Lower Nob Hill is something real estate people made up for the Tenderloin to seem less scary

    • The best place to raise a kid in sf would be bernal heights or cole valley. Bernal can be affordable and would provide you with a peaceful place to go hike and be surrounded by other families.

  • How about just moving to suburbs? Walnut Creek, Santa Clara, San Ramon, Berkeley are all great places.

    • @soGW71 heard from my friend that Santa Rosa, Benicia is good. Prices are reasonable. What about Portland, Phoneix, SLC? I wouldn’t think much, as all of these cities have tech population concentration and suburbs with tech population. I recommend suburbs as schooling districts would be good so does the crime rate.

    • Pleasanton is still within reach IMO. Anywhere in Bay Area will be expensive to some extent as I’m sure you know.

Outside CA, Chicago is a good affordable city (there are plenty of neighborhoods where you rarely find crime). Buying/renting is half as cheap as Bay Area. Austin is also one of the popular options.
