The Bay Area/Silicon Valley culture sucks

Jun 26, 2021 662 Comments

I have never worked for a Bay Area/Silicon Valley company before. But I now work with a lot of people who are live there and are used to that culture.
As someone used to living in the real world, it seems like people there are spoiled brats and cry babies used to companies giving them lots of stuff and used to being paid tons of money.

Grow up. Work pays you what you are worth and to do a job, they give you the tools to get your job done - a desk, a laptop and maybe a Keurig machine for coffee. If you want better coffee, buy it from Starbucks.

Don’t cry and whine if work doesn’t give you more than that.

Fair or harsh?

Edit: This generated a lot of hate and support. I would be curious to find out if most of the hate was from Bay Area people and most of the support was from people in the rest of the U.S….or not…
People in the Bay Area should think about the fact that America is a big country and the Bay Area does not equal the USA.

@job_sf, Been there, done that. Hated the entitled tech jerks and a lot of other downsides that the Bay has. Definitely not jealous.

    • Zoom, one can only be so demanding when the market is good. Why not milk it ? Regardless of market, your bosses will always be able to cheat on their tax. But as a lowly peasant, you only get good opportunities once every few years. Why lose out ? If you are in high demand, then you can demand that your company coffee be only sourced from farmers who are vegan.

I enjoy the perks but the level of entitlement here is astonishing. Agree 110% with OP.

@Google, if that's the case, then give an example of entitlement and I'd be glad to agree with it. It's stupid to complain about "entitlement" for just being paid well and having good non-salary compensation (aka "perks")

Snowflake having a meltdown! Why don’t you quit and go to an employer who just pays you and also penalizes you exponentially for every bug and outage that you do. If that’s not enough you can also asked to be whipped for your mistakes. Hope you are never responsible for anyone’s career.

    • Struwfl nailed it. OP is making sweeping generalizations while feeling secure in their own moral superiority.
