I’m a product designer and curious to know if having a Facebook “contract” position will somewhat deter your marketability? Will that lower my chance to apply for a full time position?

You don't have to say it is a contract job. Just put FB. Who even reads resume these days?

Curious then why do recruiters usually ask whether my current role is a contract or full time role if what matters the project and the impact?

I've gone through a ton of interviews and have never been asked that. So no idea. Esp in an "at will" world.

  • I hired a person from Facebook (where they worked as a contractor). They are an amazing designer. Pls do state clearly your role type - otherwise it can be perceived as a minus.

There’s nothing wrong with this as long as you did something interesting

Because sometimes when you are contract, people take that as you not being good enough for them to hire full time. It’s a dumb thing to think since so many designers/creatives freelance every now and again.

  • Ignore anyone who says there isn’t bias but also ignore your fears that potential bias will hurt your candidacy. Just apply for roles you’re a solid fit for. And yeah, state it somehow on your resume as claiming you were employed by one company when you were contracting there is misleading.

You want to be wanted by companies who realize there are many reasons someone might be a contractor.

I’ve hired and managed quite a few contractors into FTE roles throughout my career—the only thing I always ask is “why contract vs FTE?” The reason is that some people prefer to contract, and some were told they’d convert and didn’t. It tells you about their career goals, not their competency.

Not sure why that would be a negative. If you worked on something super trivial but even then put all your experience down. You still learned on the job in that environment
