Investing in india and getting funds back to USA

Sep 11, 2017 8 Comments

I have access to good investment opportunities in india, like buying houses and land where I know returns are lot better than what I get here in USA. I have been ignoring them from 5 years as I plan to settle in USA and heard that moving funds from India to USA is a big pain.. I am talking about 400k+ usd here..

I want to know if it is true.. is there anyone with first hand experience? What do you folks think risks are apart from exchange fluctuations

Forex fluctuations can hamper your returns significantly, also consider the black money model when selling property in India

  • Tax filing gets complicated but as long as you have NRI account and promptly file FBAR, I don't see a problem. I have moved money out of US for this purpose but not yet brought it back. So I am one speaking from half the experience.

Its a pain. Talk to a good CPA in USA and a good CA in India. As far as I know, you have to pay taxes in India before you can officially move the money out from India. You will need certification from CA to move money out from India. And then, you have to pay USA taxes on the profit, and do some complex mathematical tax calculation to claim Taxes paid in India in US returns.
