Negotiating an offer

Received an offer for a manger role (non tech) for 95k. Call with recruiter during verbal negotiation, I stated I’d feel more comfortable getting into the 6 figure range (starting point negotiation). Said he’d see what he can do and will loop in CFO (this is a big company so not sure what that means but I guess he did?).

They came back with a salary of 95k (no bonus or stock). I’m excited about the opportunity, but want to keep negotiating. Especially with how expensive things have gotten (it cost me $100 to fill my fucking car with gas right now), and I live in HCOL place (California, not Bay Area though).

Hi, it’s not clear from your post what your starting point was for negotiations. Are you getting other compensation like bonus or stock?

I actually disagree with you based on what my friend recruiter told me once; that solely relating it to the market as if they don’t do their research is repulsive. I feel like quoting the HCOL is very real and gives quantitive reasoning to the argument.

I agree with Meta. Cost of living has nothing to do with pay. It is all based on cost of labor.

Yeah go for it. $5k is doable. Could've been easier with a competing offer.

Yes, at the high end it would go over 100k. But Intel wouldn't probably do high end for 3 yoe.

  • Agencies typically pay on the low-end since they’re business model is built on charging your true market value to clients and pocketing the difference.

It’s not a terrible offer for an agency, but if you really want to make the money it sounds like you’re looking for (with stock and bonus) you should really be looking client side.
