I am in team matching phase at google. I got calls from teams which develop internal tools for google. Tools to know the health of google infrastructure. Is it good to join these teams? Can i move to teams with public facing customers in the future? Will the pay differ for these teams, as they have only internal customers? I interviewed for SWE position. Is developing internal tools for google called SETI?
Can you be more clear? :) Engineers who develop tools for internal customers are called test engineers?
A SWE is a SWE is a SWE. Doesn't matter the team, payscale is all the same. There are lots of teams working on internal stuff, and many of them are highly respected. Often these internal projects are eventually open sourced (like Bazel) or turned into external products (like Cloud Spanner).
SETI is software engineer tools & infrastructure. When I worked there, we would have near miss SWE’s reinterview with a focus on testing and automation. It’s essentially a software engineer with a different focus.
I think that if you’re working on front-end or close to users, it would be harder to then transfer in the future to a very consumer focused team, like Search. Curious what others think.
You mean it's Application Engineer position ?
No idea. I interviewed for SWE
