Im a full stack developer with 2.5 YOE.

I passed hiring committee for L3 last April, but couldnt find a team in the location I was moving to. (G office there is smaller) So I took a different job and moved there. I’m learning a lot, building interesting products, making a good salary, and made friends at work in a new city.

Now my Google recruiter has reached out about a developer productivity role in my city (my hiring committee approval is still valid). I’d much rather be in normal development and my current situation is good, but I can’t help but feel I should take this opportunity to get in while I can.

Would you take it?

For context, the job description mosty mentions test and build processes.

      Until last year it was, from what I’ve read. Now they are treated the same. As far as I know you can transfer freely, and the pay scale is the same.

      But I don’t really want to do that kind of work and I’m worried about getting stuck in it.

    There is a lot of misinformation about engineering productivity roles outside of google. It is very much a SWE role. You write code. But is targeted towards helping other engineers at google write better and faster tests. That’s just only a part of it. You get to work on tools for other productivity boosters as well.

    And the guy from Oracle doesn’t know what he is talking about.

      I said it is an swe role but at least to me its boring as fuck. There isnt cool engineering challenges involved (though optimizing build times is an interesting problem)

    Developer productivity is boring imo. You will be working on maybe their internal build tool blaze or working on their source control or their code review tools. It is important but boring as fuck work.
    Source Doing that kind of work at Oracle, interviewed for the same role at Twitter and other places so know the role.

    I personally enjoy internal tools for:
    * you have good wlb
    * not heavy oncall since your users are employees
    * A bunch of freedom for tech stack
    * Fast dev iteration
    * No A/B testing bs or PM bugging you
    * Immidiate impact, coworkers tell you how grateful they are for your work
