I’ve come to realize that blind is dominated by H1B’s. Does it bother you? I have this weird feeling about it because it’s this huge sub-culture I don’t understand. Every post seems like “H1 need help” or lottery related. I also wonder why H1’s are so into blind? Is tech just dominated by H1’s? Is it the “blind” referral culture? Its an interesting social question to me.

  • It’s absolutely okay to be mystified by that subculture. It is also okay to analyze if tech is dominated by H1B. Just be mindful of how you go about it. I am a US Citizen and as far as I am concerned, American education in science and math sucks ass and we need top talent from anywhere we can get. Yes I am aware some abuse the system. But if we can put up with entitled mass shooters, we can definitely learn to be okay with some sub- standard H1Bs.

    • xis10z. Thanks. And, I hear ya. We have got to start thinking of each other. This pandemic is a learning moment. While the system makes us think we are all on our own and whatever I do doesn’t affect you, turns out some jackass half the planet away, eat’s a bat and still manages to tank the global economy without even trying for H1B. And I am gonna bet he/she probably can’t even code like some of those people at Cisco and yet managed to create an event that got them fired. That’s how connected we all are.
We better start learning and acting like it. Especially now.

That's a great way of thinking sir! I wish more people would start thinking in such a logical and sensible manner.

  • OP, this is actually a fault of American education system. Companies don't have enough good candidates to hire for even basic tech roles. How the f*ck Americans still prefer to flip burgers for the minimum wage instead of getting tech education and earn 5-10 times more? That is incomprehensible to me.

The countries most H1Bs are sources from (India, China, maybe Pakistan, etc) seem to have a much more robust education system with regards to technology. I think a lot of home grown Americans are set in their ways thinking they could live the American dream just by going to college and getting a degree, regardless on the market value for that education.

Separately I think the H1B program is horrendous. H1Bs are supposed to be for when a company can’t find a US citizen for a job—and they have to pay a premium for finding someone outside the country. However in practice I see too many cases where:
-Company wants to hire someone but doesn’t want to pay market value. They decide to contract rather than hire an FTE to do work an FTE would normally do.
-Recruiting agencies want to make top dollar or compete in a race-to-the-bottom by seeking the lowest possible rate for a position. For example, Technical Project Manager contract in California that pays $25/hr yet wants 6+ years of experience (market value likely $70-90/hr).
-Enough US Citizens decline to interview because the rate is below market value, which triggers exception to H1B process. Company doesn’t have to pay premium on fair market rate, they have to pay premium on advertised rate of $25/hr.
-Recruiting company interviews and hires H1B from India for Technical Project Manager position at $30/hr—less than half of fair market rate.

    End state?
-H1B new hire is indentured servant working for less than anyone else in the same position for the same work, counting the days until they get their green card (likely 15+ years)... and praying they don’t lose their job or unsuccessfully transfer since they’d have to leave the country
-American who was qualified for the job couldn’t take it because it was offered way below market rate.
    -Recruiting company profits.
-End client company profits most of all.

Terrible. Anyone have a significantly different experience than this?

  • Because it's tough when your entire life is affected by something you can't control, a lottery. It's makes people anxious, hence you see H1Bs flooding Blind. Doesn't mean blind is full of H1Bs, it just means H1Bs have more reason/anxiety to post and find out if others are in the same boat, than people wanting TC evaluation or interview tips.

The people posting about H1Bs are the ones who will also respond to this poll, you know that right?

My methodology is to throw out the people who select “I’m a dick”. Then evaluate. Not perfect psychology but close as I’m going to get.

😄 I really like that methodology, except if you were really a "dick", you will never know!
