Account Manager to Technical Account Manager at Microsoft

May 13, 2021 12 Comments

Hey folks!

Hoping someone could help me here:
Does anyone have experience going from an AM role to a TAM role at microsoft?

Expecting an offer soon, and think it would be a great opportunity, but don’t want to separate myself too much from the technical stuff I enjoy in my current role.

Thanks for your help!!

  • The best CSAM I’m working with have enough tech knowledge to understand the customers needs, and the sales techniques to get them excited about adoption. A good CSAM can be extremely impactful.

I’ve never done sales before, but super excited for the opportunity to start working on that particular skillset

    • It’s not sales in the sense of Closing the deal, it’s sales in the sense of being able to get a customer excited and wanting to follow your lead. As long as you like people, can read situations and are not afraid of rejection you’ll be ok. Be passionate about making people happy, even when they don’t know they need to.

You will need to know MS tech, without a doubt, however, going into depth about any one technology is not how CSAMs create impact.

If you have any customer win stories regarding low adoption, or sales stories that solved a big problem, that helps more than talking about 1 product.

The differentiator is... most customers only recieve CSAMs when they buy Microsoft Premier Suppoet (now called Unified Support).

So AM on one area can translate into CSAM work if you can sell that product well.... and sell services to deliver the customer experience the product should create.

What products are you talking about?

Makes sense, thanks for the feedback! I’m talking about Microsoft Advertising (MSAN/Bing)

  • They aren't called TAMs anymore. They are Customer Success Account Managers (CSAMs). They also are not very technical.

  • OP - you’re getting a lot of misaligned advice.

If you want info on MSA feel free to PM

They (myself included) are like a pre-sales / post sales / product consumption manager, where you need to partner with the customer to determine their aches and pains and try to address those.
    Furthermore, you hold quota...

I'd say the level of expertise you "need" to have is around lvl 200. You will not be expected to deliver solutions yourself, so the less you know can actually be beneficial, since you will mostly be focused on talking to people at the customer business.
