Remote onboarding sucks…

Oct 18, 2021 11 Comments

Changed jobs in August and I still feel I’m onboarding and not as effective and engaged I would like to be. No matter how they try, remote team activities and onboarding just don’t help.

I like my company a lot and I do think the team is great, but it feels very challenging onboarding remotely. I’m concerned this will make me look like an incompetent EM for the team. Maybe it’s a burnout from my previous job since I took zero break in between jobs. Can someone offer tips, advice or help?

  • IC perspective: Problem is the person who is supposed to train you don't reply at all. You are basically fuked in that case. Manager is required to ensure this doesn't happen but if that still happens you are royally fuked. People who are well trained come as extraordinary top performers. And you as incompetent despite all the long hours, struggle you have made almost single handedly to understand and solve extraordinarily complex problem.

In one year, 3 reorgs so far. People don't respond. I don't feel confident about the product. Used to be a top performer always and now feeling nervous about connects. Looks like need to change job now.

I feel you. Answer to my questions are mostly yes/no from colleagues.
No details/ no context. Will have to find different ways to get answers from them

try to come off as asking for feedback so you can adjust rather than asking for help.

Yes ask for help, but to your team. Bug them more and set up 1:1 meeting with them

What's wrong with trying to learn as a manager? If your team is decent, they will be happy to answer any questions

My manager joined Amazon couple of months ago and in our 1:1 my manager asks me all the questions regarding what each service does and how they interact. Bdw I am sde1 with 1 YOE and all other team members are sde2 or sde3
