To folks not on H1b this might sound like a rant but hear me out. This is my story which i am sure is true for many others.

- i have been working in a high paying job for nearly a decade
- pay around 40 pc income tax as direct taxes
- plus 10-15 pc indirect taxes (sales tax etc), property tax etc
- contributed to economy by purchasing services and a million+ dollar home.
- never took a dime out of govt benefits instead contribute to social and medicare
- followed law to the letter. never even had a traffic ticket
- build entire professional life and family here in the US.

After all this, i been on H1b for nearly a decade with no timelines for GC. If i lose my job for any reason, i need to pack my bags uproot all that i have built and leave the country within 60 days.

Legal Immigration policies are archaic and penalize legal migration over illegal immigration, where in a legal h1b immigrant can take over 15 yrs to get GC. Multiple bills get introduced only for some knuckle head blocking it on some stupid political lines..

Its just so infuriating and frustrating.

  • Op… you are not doing anybody any favors by ā€œcontributing to the economyā€. You bought a million dollar home because you can afford it and wanted it. You didn’t do it to make America great. lol. That was your selfish reasons.

I can see your point about H1B laws modified but taxation rant is a bit much. It has been posted at least 10-20 times every year around March - April.

You get a chance to make 600k or more (assuming based on your 40% tax bracket). Where else can you make that money?? If you had this chance somewhere else you wouldn’t be in this country.

So it’s quid pro quo. You got as much or even multiples more from this country.

    • That’s exactly the point I made.
I was in line for a very long time. The perspective is still the same.

meh, you’re definitely coming across as entitled. You’re making assumptions about other people that somehow they’ve had it easier or somehow they’re in power or somehow you have been dealt with the worse hand. Cut the self-pity. I’m on H-1B in the long line and it’s an agreement I knowingly made with the government. Enjoy what you’re getting. Push for improvements, but cut out the sulking. I’ve left and come back and am willing to go out any time. Why let the government decide how I live my life.

As with any investment, if you are so risk averse that you knowingly invested your whole life, professional and social circle, in one country where you feel you can be asked to leave any moment, then that’s a pretty bad investment choice YOU made. Either become more risk accepting and work with the cards you have, or diversify to a point you feel more comfortable. By diversify, it could mean anything where you’re not relying on the immigration system here… from moving elsewhere to adjusting mindset. But start with broadening your mind and stop assuming other people aren’t or haven’t gone through a lot of tough times.

And lol, like Blue Origin pointed out, you’ve done no favors by paying your taxes or buying a house. No brownie points for a meets all expectations rating. Cut the self-aggrandizement while you’re at it if you can.

As an American born person I totally hear you and I’m sorry. No question you’ve contributed more to this country than any number of ppl who happened to be born here. It boggles my mind we make it this hard for super talented and high earning ppl like yourself. America is only America because of the foreign talent that comes here and keeps us in our position (and hopefully also benefits the ppl who come here). Heart is with you hope you get that green card soon - any type of math suggests you more than deserve it ā¤ļø

I’d rather have skilled H1Bs who went through a background check than the horde of ā€˜refugees’ at the souther border.

FYI, OP, if you live in California know that Gavin Nuisance signed a bill that gives free healthcare…. If and only if you’re an illegal alien.

Not to mention, H1Bs get thrown out 1 step out of line but illegals can commit multiple felonies and woke states won’t help with their deportation.

      OP
I hd an acquaintance who DUI ( which was totally wrong) and had his Visa revoked and deported. It just pinches to see so many illegal immigrants working on cash not paying a dime and seeing no consequence. While only mistake i did was choose US to start my career for which me and my family constantly need to worry about factor not in our control. I am eternally grateful for what the US has given us but it feels a little wanted..

You are sheep for the dems. Resistance is futile. Embrace it while being fucked

    • Not that I’m against dems or republicans but h1bs get rammed either way - immigration is just a political gains game and people on h1b puppet - no vote no voice and of course no reforms.

I've noticed most people from no-name companies will be against people like OP getting citizenship saying American talent is enough.
