I'll be joining Google Ads for some team at MTV, let's call that T as a new grad Software engineer.
I spoke to my soon to be my mentor and soon to be reporting manager. My mentor said, T's backend is fully ML and collaborates with Google brain for models.

Now, can I say my role as Software engineer, Machine Learning?
or should I just say Software engineer?

Does Google not have formalized MLE titles? Maybe decide once you see if that is actually what you are working on.

My mentor said we won't be creating new ML algos (model types) , rather use those libraries created by G brain team and tweak those. Can I still call my self MLE?

What's in a name? I've never been bothered by the title. I am MLE before MLE title exists, so I have swe on my title. I got ml interviews and general backend interview no problems. Don't worry too much

If some other company calls Google HR and asks them what your title is, that is your title.

There is a formal SWE-ML title in Google because some teams need someone already spun up on ML and they have a slightly different loop.

Once you are inside your work speaks for itself. If you are applying externally put whatever.

I would list the title that describes what you do functionally as it relates to the new opportunity, rather than what the company labels you so long as it's done to better inform rather than to deceive recruiters or interviewers. So don't up your level or seniority, but do add details such as ML if that's what you actually do.
