I’m a Data Science student and need to get a solid laptop that would be useful and durable to continue into Consultancy Business. Which will you chose between Lenovo Workstation P52 and Legion Y730 gaming laptop? Both are laptops and affordable for me.

Most open source data science tools don't work with shitty windows. Either buy a MacBook or something which works with Ubuntu

So what would be a good solid laptop and configuration that I won’t need to upgrade after school.

Build a desktop and get a cheap chromebook you can use to remote in.

Or better yet just wait. Your new top of the line laptop will be outdated in two years anyway, and most schools have compute clusters you can get access to to train your models on. Way more power than any laptop you'll buy there, and all for free to you. Just need to ask around about it when you start classes. Instead get a mid range $500 laptop and an external SSD for storage

Virtualization sucks. I have a Lenovo T460 which I bought from offer up and maxed it out on specs. Installed Ubuntu and do a lot of spark work. Works like a charm

How did you install Ubuntu on it? Did it come with a Windows OS?

Just download Ubuntu ISO on a USB stick. And reboot the machine. Change the boot order in bios to boot from USB. That's it. Amazing performance and much better desktop experience

Sounds like a great idea. I will get a good chrome book or a portable laptop to link to my school data lab and build a desktop at home as I progress. I am not need a mobile data center. Thanks so much.

Build a desktop and use it as a server for your jobs if you can't use cloud vendors or plan to run a ton of DL models that make the cloud cost too high

Why not run resource heavy ML workloads on Cloud VMs ? Azure has Data Science VMs for this, both really top of the line ones for DL, & more run of the mill ones. AWS must have something of this type as well.
