Been thinking a lot recently about changing companies. Some part of it is definitely out of frustration of weak product culture and bets being made. Other parts of it revolve around wanting to do something more impactful or new. At about 2.5 years of experience as a PM right now.

I imagine every tech company has their ups and downs when it comes to work-life, comp, culture etc; how does one confidently decide when it’s time to move on? How do people get a read on other companies and if life there will actually be better?

It doesn’t matter if you leave or no. Leaving Yelp and joining Google or leaving fb and joining Amazon...it’s all the same bro. You leave or don’t leave, at the end of the day you are an engineer having a 9-5 job like everyone else...You don’t become a Tom Cruise overnight by just switching...haha. Life is still the same and you still get a paycheck at the end of the day..so just chill and get going with life...We don’t know what’s the real truth of life..Switching jobs is just a thing coz once you have a job, it’s like what next? The question the mind frames to you is What next? The thing is there is always a next...Does that mean you keep chasing it.? You can take a pause and look back and reflect on what’s been happening so far and the ruckus that’s created in life rather than running like a mad man everywhere.

Just recruit, get a better offer, and then go. If you don't have an offer in hand, youre just jerking off alone in the dark when you're asking whether you should leave or not. Get a bunch of real offers in hand and then the answer will be a lot clearer

If you can't decide this, what kind of Product decisions do you make?

    Checkbox placements? 😂

Aside from time commitment, I don't think there is any harm for you to talk to people and explore other opportunities if you are not very happy. You may decide staying put if there is no other role that is attractive to you, but the process will give you more clarity on your own priority and tradeoff. I am happy to chat if you dm me. We also have a few opened pm roles that may be attractive to candidates who are looking for impact in a pre-ipo company

As a pm - it’s good to ask these questions of yourself and your surroundings. I’m 10+ yoe as a pm and if I didn’t ask these questions I would have never left and learned more. You have to think deeply about why you’re thinking about leaving? Have some recent decisions been too top down? Some coworkers are being jerks? You have more work than you can handle? You’re constantly pivoting? There is lots of stress? If so — I agree with some of the other answers. These problems exist everywhere. And 1 year into a new job you’ll be facing these same problems. But...other things to consider: do you feel valued within your team and company? Does the next year provide you interesting projects or opportunities for growth? Are you passionate about the product and feel that you can help it succeed? If the answers to these questions is no ... then that’s something to think about. Luckily, the market for PM is very good right now so its sometimes helpful to consider another opportunity. Even if you realize you’re fine where you are. I’m assuming that your comp is at market and the company is stable.
