High TC times Job Insecurity vs Work Visa
I have never understood the dynamics. Seeking clarifications only.
High TC is for Irreplaceable skills (which we all know doesn't exist in Tech, everybody is replaceable), or just exceptional Interview Performance / Preparation. I have never heard any developer exclaim they interviewed God for an Individual Contributor Dev Role.
High TC also comes with High Job Insecurity, teams and orgs re-align, budgets are redirected, diverted, even PIP.
Particularly Tech is always a Cost-to-the-Company, irrespective of what industry the Company is associated with. I have also never understood Tech is the Revenue side of the business?
Anyhow, considering high TC is for all the insecurity that arises from the uncertainty, how do people with Work Visas even pursue Startups or small to mid-sized companies like Uber, Wayfair, Doordash etc? In my opinion, unless the entire Tech Operations Department's head-count of Individual Contributor Engineers alone is at least 10,000 employees, then it's a very uncertain work-place?
Obligatory TC - $90 per hour.
Obligatory YOE - 16 in Java, includes 9 in Android.

High TC is a function of what the market will bear and the demand vs supply of skills.
Nor is all tech a cost center. Product teams are profit centers and revenue increases can be directly tied to specific features and changes.
When small changes in code result in millions of dollars in new revenue, it is easier to understand how high TC is just a cost of goods sold.
