Where does the engineer have higher chances of larger scope of work?

In Amazon very few teams are deep technology. In those kinds of teams L7 is usually involved in some deep tech problems like an IC (still matching in scope and complexity of L7 - example replication component), however in most other teams u need to be more like a TechLead to generate equivalent scope and impact.

I am assuming more teams in Google are technically deeper compared to Amazon given the kind of problem space they are in, so are L6 engineers usually IC than TL?

Let’s assume both are low end of these levels.

The google L6s I know are bored. Amazon l7 scope/ownership is far greater. Of course the comp and perks of google can’t be matched... but I’d pick Amazon l7

Whatever. I doubt any L7 would consider principal role though.

You get what you get, and you decide to accept or not. Not saying it isn’t doable, but L8 IC at Amazon is super difficult. These positions have their own recruitment, org go out and look for people vs you applying on career website. You won’t find many on jobs website and most Sr.Principals are promoted internally. (Edit) Sr.Principal is considered an executive hire. So a separate recruiting process altogether. Source: Amazon Recruiter AMA post.

I believe Amazon places greater emphasis on influence whereas other companies don’t place that much at this level I think. Instead it’s probably more IC oriented impact is permitted.

Is this true? Can someone from G or F confirm/deny?
