Have too much money for my own good I think?

Mar 30, 2021 14 Comments

I sometimes think at NW of 400k at the age of 27, I have too much money. Then I read blind posts and see people with nw of 4 million or so crying at not having enough money. Is there something that I am missing? I live an interesting lifestyle with monthly expenses around 3500 or so and rent a studio apartment in midtown. I was born and brought up in India and I sometimes feel like taking a break and teaching/travelling in India, Indonesia and other south east Asian countries.

Am I just dumb to think like that or my thoughts make sense to the community here?

For most of us, the desire to have a lot of money isn’t driven by materialism or the need to buy expensive things. It’s more so we don’t want to have to work anymore. Working for a boss with all the pressure of deadlines and the consequences of not delivering just sucks! And having a lot of money is one way to get out of that

    • Yes agree. But, sometimes I feel if I am not happy with 400k at 27, what is the guarantee I will be happy with 4m at the age of 35!! IOW, I feel like 400k is enough to explore something new! Don't know if it matters but I don't plan on having kids or getting married anytime soon!

There’s a big difference between $400k and $4m. Even though 400k sounds like a lot, it’s not enough to be “set for life” since it can’t cover the expenses of your typical American for several decades (especially at 27 years old with a lot of life to live). Not to mention, all that money could easily be gone in the event of an emergency.

$4m, on the other hand, is enough to generate a stable income for you just purely from the return on investments, while still allowing you to withdraw money from it for yearly expenses.

  • There are two types of people. Those that know what enough is and will eventually get it, and those that have no idea and will never have it.

Define what enough is for you and you'll set yourself up for success. You have to define what the success is though, and this is the hard part.

  • This is a case of “grass is greener on the other side”. Don’t fall for it. I left my first job at a large bank because I wanted a “more noble pursuit” so I took a pay cut when I went to my second job. Well, here’s what happened: I was overworked for less money, and only then did I realize how good my life was prior. Do not fantasize that there must be more to life when life is at its peak already.

I think this is a personal thing. Based on your goals, ambitions and what you want from life, any amount of money can be sufficient or insufficient. Reading people’s NW on here can make you overthink where you’re at in life, but take a step back and reset. Your answer about “is it enough” is pretty much in your post itself.

As Michael Scott once said - "Mo money, mo problems". I think it holds true.
