I'm working as a SWE with 2 YoE in Paris and I have a TC of €46K. I know it sounds ridiculous compared to US salaries, but I'd like to know how high can salaries get in Europe cities for a junior software engineer? can we reach the 100K+ salaries that seem to be common in the US? #Europe #Paris #Berlin #Stockholm #Brussels #tc #salaries #salary
I was thinking of moving from SF to Paris. The quality of life is Europe seems a lot better. Food, travel, transportation, healthcare, higher education, etc all seem light years ahead of SF. Would you agree? Is there anything you dislike about Paris that I may not see as a tourist?
If you don't speak French, your social life is will take a big hit
Out of all countries from Europe, I wouldn't recommend France as a stranger. Germany is a little better, but they're not doing that well either. If you do want to move to Europe, check out some insights from Blind about the place you're moving to, as there might be people/places with negatives you wouldn't think of in US. (And the same the other way around)
Google Zurich pays close to US. Less in total numbers, but it's somewhat offset by lower tax and rent. Elsewhere in Switzerland 120-150k CHF is typical for a senior. Junior maybe 80-100k. 200k+ possible for contractors though you have higher employment expenses as well then vs being an employee.
100k is possible for sure. 200k+ is tough without being a manager or even director in a strong company. Keep in mind with the American salaries that they are slaves. 2 weeks leave a year (including sick days), you *need* health insurance which is inherently tied to employment, and you live in a culture very much built around who you work for. Money is important - I'm glad I earn 150k USD equiv - but I would never submit to the slavery required to double that in America.
I have 10 sick days a year and 20 vacation days plus a couple personal days off. This in US. Yeah that’s not as much as Europe but 2 weeks leave a year not true in US for most of known companies. In US you have lower taxes so that combined with higher gains might allow you to retire early anywhere in the world if you’re smart.
Lol, it's generally a lil bit worse in the US but definitely not as bleak as you describe. Some US companies have unlimited vacation and sick days policy. Many are not too iffy about WFHs, or if you spend less 8 hours in the office. As long as you get your shit done and not in a rush to get promoted. Never heard of sick days being counted against vacation days, I suspect it's probably even illegal Health insurance is not a problem while you're working. And when you stop working, why not move to a low CoL country with cheap good healthcare? With the money you saved in the US you might afford to not work another day in your life ever again
As someone pointed out - Google Zurich pays well. You can also work for companies, which have a global salary policy and don't adjust it locally. To my knowledge, some consulting firms (e.g., tech-y one being Palantir) or startups do that.
i never heard of such a policy. thanks, I'll check it out!
Paris metro area, senior plus, SWE, TC of 85keur.
Google zurich is not hiring SWE these days

I’ve been checking job openings, and there was not any SWE opening since September. Do 300+ leetcode problems before applying;)
