how to negotiate for uplevel?

If I’m given an offer thats L4 and recruiter and I agree on the TC numbers, how do I negotiate for L5 leveling?

Negotiating on TC can be done using competing offers or even current TC. What legit reasoning can I give for upleveling other than “You should value my skills at L5” (I think that comes off arrogant and cocky and could backfire but maybe I’m wrong)?

    Why would you want a higher level if you’re ok with the TC? It leaves you more room to get promoted and raise your TC even more.

      True, good point, but doesn’t being in a high level mean your raises are bigger? Like if I am at L4 salary ceiling but not promoted, my TC is stuck until I get promo.

  • I don’t think you can negotiate level... Usually there is different breakdown/types of interviews associated with each level.

    if you are at the top of your range, it's easier to jump on the next level (assuming you are qualified) and you will get a good raise when you jump level.

    • Can you please elaborate, as in join as L4 with top band (higher end of L4 and lower end of L5 probably) , promotion to next level yields better no’s ?

      Depends on the company. Independent of where you were in L4 you'll get to the bottom of L5 in Amazon after promotion, which might actually lower your TC if there was a recent stock appreciation.

    Afaik, you can't negotiate level. The only way would be walk away and try after an year (not guaranteed that you won't get downlevelled)

    What is the TC offered?
