Rejected at Uber for not finishing question, but I did...
Recently did Onsite at Uber, overall team liked me and had gotten 2 people mentioning the work I’ve done previously is impressive.
Was told I do not have significant experience and that I did not finish one of the questions.
However, this would all make sense to me if this was the case but:
1.) I have 5 years of experience, I prepared a few slides to showcase some of my work (visuals). Since I was interviewing for mobile, I showcased I’ve done both platforms. Some of the apps I’ve created have hit top of the ranking charts for both platforms. I’ve created and implemented products from scratch to release. Managed a few junior engineers. Built internal tools to increase productivity among team members. I’m not sure where the lack of experience statement came from, but I would ABSOLUTELY love more critical feedback because honestly would love to improve more. Since Uber depends on mobile, I figured I would be a valuable asset there given my background?
2.) The recruiter told me the critical part for not getting an offer was that I did not finish one of the questions. For that question we had technical difficulties with HackerRank and I ended up using an IDE instead. The question was fairly basic and the interviewer told me he isn’t looking for optimization but for it to work. I got the two proposed functions to work properly and even described optimizations for those two questions. Since I coded everything in my own IDE I had a copy of the code I implemented. The interviewer at the time of the round told me it “looks good.” Since I was thrown off by the “didn’t finish,” I told the recruiter I had a copy of the question on my laptop and I could send it over to her - not sure how much this will help, but the recruiter mentioned they would forward it to the hiring manager for that team.
Looking for advice since I honestly would have loved to work at Uber, given my background.
Again I’m not too bummed since I’ve created and launched apps of my own and have other offers.
Maybe I’m completely off and I do suck 🤷♂️ but I’ve been objectively looking at my work and background and it would have been strategically a good move for Uber to bring me on board.
Confused as well at some of the statements of not finishing one of the questions on the round since I have a finished implementation of the question on my own hard drive.
Can this be mitigated? The recruiter mentioned they would talk to the teams manager about my finished implementation that I emailed them, but I’m not keeping any expectations here.
