In the 1 SWE and 1 PM case, i can argue the PM has to be there, I can always hire contractors but I need to ensure my product can be sold. My interactions with many SWEs are they built sth they thought user would buy and they can care a MVP quickly, but the product market fit is not right and they can’t get customers to buy in.

  • As a techie I would want the research scientist to have the most clout given that they most likely have a PhD and are an expert in a particular field. However, in practice the product manager role tends to be viewed as the more “glamorous” role with more clout given that they are the stakeholder or representative of the business. They also tend to be more charismatic and polished than the brilliant code monkeys so they get even more attention

  • Any role that involves or requires publication revolves around prestige. The whole publishing industry is people paying to publish their articles and then paying to access them too. They do it because prestige.

None of these have much prestige or clout. Being a founder is respectable, then being part of the C-Suite. Everyone else is a replaceable cog.
