AWS and Alexa are hiring. Though Alexa has already hired 50% of its 2018 budgeted HC growth as of February, as they had already over hired in 2017.

Rest of the company is tightening its belt. The company now has quotas for unregretted attrition (URA), 5% of the lowest performing employees are to be laid off this year. They don’t call them quotas they call them targets, but they are quotas. This is separate and distinct from other targets, such as 5% to get Least Effective rating (no raise) or 6-10% to be put on a dev plan (precursor to PIP and termination), depending on org. Getting a dev plan results in that employee being terminated (via agreed upon severance or outright firing) 65-70% of the time.

Your rating is determined almost solely by your manager, so you better know you are getting hired into a team that has your back. The people who have been at amazon <2 years are most susceptible to getting managed out to meet URA quota.

Amazon has become a stressful place, worthy of an NYT round #2, and it will hopefully normalize soon.

WeBW, you are pretty accurate with your guesstimates. Alexa included. WTF, no one said this is wrong. Just that it is happening and possibly will result in some sort of activity in the press over the year. It's a self correcting exercise and will make the company better. However, WebW is right. This year is going to not be good for a good 10% of current Amazonians.

I totally agree. I was just given a LE rating even though my performance had no issues on the name of earn trust. Solid deliver results this year. I don’t know how the performance is evaluated :(. It’s totally confusing and disappointing to be here and it’s not worth to take risk to leave your current job and join Amazon.

There's a hiring freeze in some orgs and some reorgs are causing layoffs. There's still hiring but a lot less than 2-3yrs ago. Many orgs overhired. Forced attrition rates are back this year. Also, they want to create a backlog of positions for HQ2.
