Buying first car

What are new drivers doing in this current market? Being forced to consider buying a new car. Being a new driver, without much practice, a used one/cpo would have been a natural choice but this market is not giving that option. Is the best option to bite the bullet and get a new one? Scared to get a beater that may become a lemon. Everything else in between is heavily overpriced. Waiting further is becoming more of a pain when not living in a city.

No I would not recommend buying a new car. This is primarily because if you're a new driver, you're susceptible to more expensive insurance. With a used car the insurance amount will be significantly lower. Also if you're a new driver the probability of having a minor crash/ accident is significantly more. So in case something does go wrong (it doesn't have to be you're fault always) you'll be forced to pay $$$ to get it fixed on a new car. You don't have have to buy beater, got plenty of decent options in the 10k to 20k range.

    • Get your point, but Most decent 7 year old cars, Honda, Toyota, Mazda are priced around$16k with 80k+miles, which would last 5 years. I could get a new for $23k. Math is favoring the new in this market

  • Get something with blind spot detection and cross traffic radar, don’t get an expensive car and watch those rims!

    • Just to play devil’s advocate, buying a car without those really teaches you how to drive properly.

Also note that backup cameras are now required by law to be in cars manufactured May 2018 and later. That is the only assist you need.

  • New cars are not selling at MSRP but way over, still cheaper to buy used unless you can get a good deal.

You may not have time for this but best option is to factory order and get in writing the dealer will not add extra markup at delivery. Used cars are stupid expensive and new cars on the lot tend to have dealer makeup.
