Interviewers @ top tier: Is the rigid interview format useful, or do you wish you could be more free form with candidate

Mar 4, 2021 7 Comments

The interview process at many large companies is rigid and doesn't leave much or any time to freely talk with the candidate.

For those of you that interview people often, is this something you wish was different?

If it's not rigid you're just picking people who seem fun or look like you or have a similar background to you

Or you’re asking about people’s actual background and digging in under the surface to gauge their competence... instead of randomly hiring whoever memorized leetcode and got lucky enough to hit the loop where they got questions they’ve seen before.

Interview 100 candidates and hire the 10 that got the lucky roll of the dice. And on the candidate side, interview at FAANG annually until you get the loop where you have seen all the questions before.

      It’s just a game, it’s broken

I would give candidates a debugging exercise on a complex data structure if I could
