this has been the situation for years now. at first i thought it was a good thing since managers can be really annoying but now i'm starting to think i may be at a disadvantage regarding any career progression. but then again some employees with managers never progress internally either.
wondering what others think of this situation and if this is a good thing or bad

      i was given a history lesson a few months ago regarding the guy who i replaced... he had it really bad. when i joined the majority of his work was already offloaded to romania. so coasting the whole time i've been here i guess.
      but i'm not gonna say i do zero... in all honesty my product is incredibly stable these days. i put a lot of things in place to make that the reality today. a lot of automation to handle the things that other employees used to ask me for. but now that it is so stable there is much less for me to do and nobody to really assign anything. that doesn't mean i am bored, or more bored, or that i'm complaining about it. i imagine everyone gets bored, even those that are overworked.
      the only thing i am complaining about is my concern that my career progression and future is in jeopardy.

      I have never worked in an environment where “done” is a concept.

      The only concept is how much I can reduce the schedule deadlines, or prevent them from massively expanding.

      They don't have to put you on PIP to fire you. They can fire you for any reason whenever they want as long as you're not a protected class and it's not discrimination.

      It costs more money to replace someone than to keep them employed. If they can put you on PIP and scare you into performing better why not try. If you continue to underperform they will cut their losses. Many companies do not have PIP. It's not necessary to cover their ass to prevent discrimination lawsuit if there wasn't any discrimination.

      Lol money or not sometimes you just wanna fire someone for whatever reason but if you put it on paper and document "poor performance" their chances at a wrongful termination suit are diminished. You sound like a manager or someone that's drank the Kool aid no offense

      I'm just saying they don't have to put you on PIP to fire you. I'm sure many people at a FAANG company have been fired without PIP
