A genuine question: I read some blind discussions about Netflix and it seems that flat structure has it's pros and cons. Given that staff or senior staff positions in other top tech companies generally require some leadership experiences, does it make it harder for Netflix folks to land L6 or L7 in other companies or seeking managing experiences within Netflix?

    • Yes. There is no disagreement at all. Just that, I would scrutinize Netflix engineers on leadership / system design more than I would other senior folks from equivalent companies.

I wholeheartedly agree they have great eng. But getting staff or senior staff positions you have to pass interview and leadership skill is a big one. I'm just genuinely curious if having a very flat structure will make it harder for people to get staff level positions outside. It's not that levels are so important, but the reality is that you might need staff level positions to get similar pay and similar scope of work at Netflix.

You have the TC to back you up. The other companies either pay you enough or they won't be able to hire you from Netflix. TC decides title, not the other way around.
