Hi Blinders,

Hiring manager is asking me to choose one of the path between Applied Scientist or MLE.

Applied Scientist(AS) - Junior Level(Since I do not have research publications)

MLE - Mid Level

I have been working as a Data Scientist cum MLE for 4-5 years and prior to that I have worked as a SDE for 5+ years.

As per title I am more inclined towards AS but then worried about future impact after starting at junior level after 11 YOE overall.

Please advise.

Take MLE and work internally to change roles if you want. Promo is a pita and L5 SDE RSU grant tends to be better than L4 AS, even though AS comp is higher at same level.

Actually, even better decision is to find another company and save yourself the BS that waits for you at Amazon and Alexa in particular. Unless youโ€™re confident the manager is good and you trust your luck that will remain so for a while.

EDIT: 11YOE!? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Classic Amazon downleveling BS. Itโ€™s started already and you ainโ€™t even in yet... Wish you all the best!

In your position, Iโ€™d try to find someone in your circle who can give you a second opinion so you donโ€™t make a decision only based on opinion of a random Blinder. But Iโ€™m honestly trying to be real with you...
