MBA? In this economy?

Jun 13, 2020 84 Comments

Accepted to a top 5 MBA with no scholarship, but currently working a good stable job in corp strategy/corp dev with TC ~$110k. I’ve worked for the same company my whole career and it is known in its industry and regionally but isn’t a big well-known firm. Goal of MBA would be to broaden my horizons/network, shoot for MBB consulting or tech industry corp strategy. Worth it to go to school even in this crazy uncertain world we’re in right now? #mba #finance #consulting #tech #finance

Due to pandemic, most course work will be online. Enjoy your lesser worth degree. You don’t make connections over zoom.

  • No, I strongly recommend to delay your MBA for a year or two. Many industries are suffering right now. This is expected to get worse over the new few months. We don't know yet what the long-term impact will be. Don't quit your nice job.

    • Same situation. Choice between a top 7 mba or Ms in cs. Decided to do mba. It’s going to give you more options. Lot of people told me that if u want to learn the technical skills, u don’t need a degree.

Congrats. That really depends on technical skills. Some are better to be learnt in school, some like sql and excel you can learn on the job.

I did the same several years ago: top 5 mba, starting at age 28, with similar comp. I had an incredible experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything, and yes, it grew my comp considerably.

Doing your mba (or any education) during a recession is great timing. Most of us should expect lower than average comp increases / career opps over the next two years, but you could spend that time significantly increasing your marketability.

The only downside: you may be going to school remotely, which is very non ideal for an mba program (which is otherwise a very social, teamwork-based program). If I thought remote learning would only last for the fall, and then things would return to normal, I would do it. If I thought remote learning was going to run longer than that, I would consider trying to defer for a year.

Agree with this. Also keep in mind that the fall semester is when you meet most of you classmates and it is when the strongest bonds are created.

best time to go to b-school is during a recession. go for it! economy will be better by the time you graduate with and a top 5 mba is nothing to scoff at.
