Why are companies hire lazy employees and ok with a slacker image?

Certain companies like Microsoft and Google have begun to attract lazy employees. The ones who want to “retire”. You see this sentiment on Blind all the time. This is due to these companies having an image where slacking at work is the norm. I can’t see how this is good for the company nor can I see how this is good for the career growth of people working there. When I see a candidate from Microsoft I automatically assume they don’t have the work ethic to be cut out for Amazon. I’ve always felt work ethic is extremely important in delivering results for shareholders. Better work hard and be mediocre than be lazy and smart. Work in tech doesn’t require geniuses.

Many of us manage to do our work, go above and beyond, and grow at 40 hours.
I get working hard. But if you're working that hard to to justify your pay which was predicated on you working 40 hours, that suggests there's a problem with you.
Want to know how I get more than 40 hours of work done despite just working 40 hours in a particular week? I improve the work efficiency of my team. So instead of me needing to work 2X, I get 1.5X output out of multiple people. Then we collectively see > 2X improvement while working 40 hours.
