So Netflix doesn't actually have a referral bonus, which is one way of dealing with that problem. It means you refer people because you want to work with them again, ideally.

I'm pretty solid at FPS... reason enough to refer with me?

I have 25 years of experience as an engineer and I’ve had many interviews. I have to admit that Amazon has it down better than anyone. They are consistent and balanced, though at the expense of being impersonal. The time to be personal is the screening by the recruiter, this is when you’re asked things like: tell me about yourself, where do you want to be in 5 years, why do you want to work here, etc. The on-site is after that, 50% technical (with the mix of coding and design based on the level), and 50% leadership principals. The LPs can be harder than the coding, but they get to a point and don’t leave room for you to talk generically about how great you are. Sometimes I miss the old interviews that are like marketing presentations, where you can make anything up and they’ll frequently just listen without forcing you to drill down and show your impact. But there were way fewer of us back then passing ourselves off as developers.

As someone that just went through a gauntlet of interviews, I felt the mostb accurately assessed when technical interviews checked for pitfalls I'd encounter on the job.

As mostly front end, doing JavaScript, a lot of it was about variable scoping, context and execution order. The random algorithm stuff was a coin flip on whether or not I was going to come at the problem correctly or not.
