New Grad Microsoft Vs Amazon offers

Jan 20, 2021 11 Comments

Hi all, hoping to get some opinions on these offers

Microsoft L59 in Sunnyvale, CA:
120k salary, 70k stock, 40k sign
TC: 158k first 2 years, 138k after

Amazon SDE 1 in Austin, TX
116k salary, 86k stock, 50k sign
TC: -150k

It seems like Amazon is a better financial decision due to income tax and lower cost of living in Austin but I think that Microsoft is a better culture fit for me. Let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

In Austin, that salary is worth 15% more due to lack of taxes and 30% more because of cost of housing.

I hated working at Amazon but Microsoft is known for low-balling everything below L65, and their offer would have to be a TC over $220k to be competitive in terms of purchasing power.

If you're interested in FIRE, Amazon is the only answer unless you can get another offer.

You will learn more at amazon but can be miserable on a bad team. Tough choice but if you are confident with LC then you can always ditch Amazon whenever.

    • Hey OP, I know microsoft is in the lead right now but I know a few people from school at amazon in austin and they say it is much better than amazon in washington. When you choose your team you can evaluate based on how overworked/overloaded they seem. Choosing a team with less on their plate means it is more likely to be a little more relaxed. You can still get unlucky but the odds are better.
