Considering applying for a position as an internal candidate. EA policy dictates you must notify your current manager if submitting your application; obviously if it doesn't work out it is not a great situation. Does anyone have experience going through this process and how did you handle it?

Overall EA is supportive of people changing teams and expanding their experience.

I applied for an internal role last year and wasn’t sure of the process. There were some things that went out of order there but at the end of the day my manager understood and was supportive of me looking.

I didn’t end up getting the role and it didn’t have a negative effect on me at all.

Thanks for the insight - not getting the role is obviously a concern but glad it didn't have a negative impact for you.

Never ever click that button. I think the others have been lucky that their managers were good.

Every company has this stupid system. What most people do is that they contact the hiring manager for a coffee chat, do an informal loop and only when they have a guaranteed offer, then they tell their manager in a 1x1 and click on that button.

  • I did this when I was at EA. It went great, but I had a decent relationship with my manager and they knew I was looking for other opportunities and why. I ended up getting two internal offers and taking one of them. I’m pretty sure if I hadn’t gotten or taken an offer, my manager would have been happy to have me stay in my previous role.

Good to know - appreciate it. Reassuring to hear that your manager was supportive and understanding of your decision regardless of outcome!

  • Email the hiring manager and ask for an ‘informational’ (casual chat about the role and if you would be a potential fit) - then, say you want a good sense of if you would be a good fit before you risk your relationship with your current manager
