Was offered L60 but I asked for L61 since I had 3.5 yoe and they just gave me it..?
Has this happened to anyone else? Why not just give me L61 to start with?

  • I'd honestly just join in level 60. Unless pay bump is significant

    • Because unless pay bump is significant you'll get an easier first year and you'll be compared against people at your same level. If you are already operating at 61 then you should be able to maximize your rewards at 60 then, and then when you get promoted to 61 you'll also get awesome rewards then.

People usually want to rush to become senior quickly, but the truth is that you should be aiming to higher rewards not to higher levels. When you go up a level as an IC the company benefits more than you

    • You might argue that higher levels get higher rewards... but do they really get that much higher rewards in comparison to the amount effort that's expected of you? ๐Ÿค”

Microsoft is the only company where you can negotiate level with the recruiter ๐Ÿคฃ

  • Every company wants people to join at the lowest level/salary as possible. Over the long term the company saves so much money on comp.

  • Did they also give a compensation increase commensurate with the level bump? If not then 100% not worth, stick with the lower level so that you can get a quick promo
