I have about 30k cash sitting in my checking account which I would like to invest. I’ve been reading about index funds and ETFs from blind and decided to go that route. I opened a fidelity brokerage account since I’ve my 401k with them. I’ve invested 10k in Fidelity 500 Index fund FXAIX. Is this the right approach. I need suggestions on what to pick for the remaining 20k. thanks for your help!
Small cap
Are you referring to FSLCX, FCPGX, FSSNX?
Just diversify your portfolio. Make sure the other index funds you're putting the rest of the money in doesn't have overlapping securities or you're not truly diversified. I've had good luck with small cap funds personally. Take suggestions from people but do the research and verify yourself. The only other advice I have would be to go for strictly aggressive growth funds with a good track record.
Thanks. Can you name a few funds. I’m new to this so need some place to start. Thanks. Are you referring to Fidelity small cap growth fund, small cap stock fund
I would just look for small cap funds they don't always have small cap in the name. Small cap(I believe) is defined by the market cap off the company being between 500 mill and 2.5 billion. $JGMNX , $vsgax are some to look into.
Go with Vanguard
VTI and nothing else until you hit 500K.
What is significant about the 500K point?
Safety net and play poker with 100-200K after that. Everything including profits and savings should be going back to index fund. This rule worked for me and 95% of people should do it. I am planning to open YouTube channel and help people
VTI is the entire equities market. Large-, mid-, and small-cap equity diversified across growth and value styles. It’s a great approach to simplify your investing in equities.
Age? If younger 30% QQQ - tech heavy, 30% SPY, 10% international growth, 10% international value, 10% fixed income or closed end fund if you like dividends, or conservative value fund like VTV, 10% ALWAYS cash for that dip buy or emergency.
Don’t do anything smart and complicate. No need for international as now a days many large caps are international. So, you are covered with VTI
Move it out of your checking account for starters!!
This. Any remaining money you want kept in cash, put in a high interest savings account such as with Ally or Marcus
Use SoFi, it’s a checking account with higher interest than both Ally and Marcus
