Facebook Bootcamp

What's Facebook Bootcamp? I heard something that sounded like it was a test after being accepted which you could fail and then not actually get to work at Facebook. Any truth to that?

  • To reiterate: it's hard to fail bootcamp. And it takes more than just "I can't find a good fitting team". I've seen two people (out of ~200 I knew as they went through) who got fired before bootcamp was over. One of them was because they actually did not complete any tasks (as in, they wrote about 20 lines of code that didn't solve the 10-lines-of-code problems they had), and the other was for blatantly breaking a company policy.

If you are an experienced hire, bootcamp is great: you get 6-12 weeks to ramp up where no one cares whether you're operating like a new grad or a 20 year veteran tech lead. All you need to do is focus on learning what you'll need to know and on building relationships with people who can help you once you start on a team.

  • If you pass the hiring bar it's very unlikely you would fail bootcamp.

  • No it's where you spend 6-10 weeks learning about internal technology and best practices at FB (taking classes, similar to college), doing some actual work teams need done (reinforce what you've learned), and meeting teams you're interested in joining.

When you find a team you like, you join them and start working for that team. Specialists hired for a certain team usually don't spend time during the team selection period. They usually go sit with the team that hired them as early as possible and begin integrating with the team while in bootcamp.

From what they told us, it's pretty hard to fail bootcamp. There's a lot of resources to help those struggling. And there's always a lot of teams looking for new hires so it's unlikely you can't find a team to join.

  • Bootcamp is the best! You get to spend a bunch of time learning internal technology, do some misc tasks then some tasks from teams you're interested in l.
I love that Bootcamp exists. And no it's not a test.
